At your routine dental visits, your dentist may perform an x-ray on your mouth for one of many reasons, such as for detection of cavities or gum disease. You may be used to the traditional x-rays, known as bitewing x-rays, where you bite down on a piece of plastic for the image to be taken. At Columbia Dental, we have also introduced the use of panoramic x-rays, a modern device that captures an image of your entire mouth. Because panoramic x-rays are a newer technology, there has been some skepticism of the devices. However, panoramic x-rays have actually been proven to serve an important purpose in early problem identification, as well as being more comfortable for the patient.

When you get a panoramic x-ray, the machine rotates around your head once, producing an image of your teeth, jaw, and bones in your head and neck. The process is completely painless and lasts about 30 seconds, providing a much easier and comfortable experience for patients who may become anxious when taking x-rays. This varies from bitewing x-rays, in which multiple images may need to be taken, prolonging any discomfort you may feel.

In addition to being a more convenient and pleasant experience than traditional x-rays, panoramic x-rays allow for dentists to more easily identify major dental issues. By having access to an image of your entire head, neck, and jaw, problems such as cancer, tumors, growths, cysts, and jaw abnormalities can be detected early. This early identification is extremely important in maintaining your health, as well as typically resulting in less invasive and expensive treatments. Therefore, panoramic x-rays are not only more comfortable, but are also very beneficial in monitoring your dental health.
