Bad breath can be caused by many things—bacteria buildup in your mouth, some medications, or certain diets and foods. No matter what the cause may be for your bad breath, there are many steps you can take to improve the scent of your breath.

What you choose to eat has a major impact on the scent of your breath. Smelly foods, such as onions and garlic, can cause your breath to smell worse. Also, rather than having a breath mint following a meal, which only temporarily masks any bad scents, you should choose to chew sugarless-gum instead. Doing so will not only improve your breath, but also help reduce the likelihood of cavities.

In addition to what you eat, what you drink can also make your breath smell better or worse. Drinks like coffee and alcohol can leave you with bad breath for hours after you finish the drink. Also, if you are unable to brush your teeth after a meal, drinking water can help remove bacteria and food particles from your mouth that can make your breath worse.

Maintaining and enhancing your oral hygiene routine can also help fight bad breath. This means brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing everyday, and cleaning your tongue with your toothbrush. You should also be cleaning any dental appliances, such as dentures, replacing your toothbrush every few months, and using a mouthwash designed to kill bacteria. By completing all of these steps, in addition to visiting the dentist regularly, the quality of your breath can improve.
